Penile implants are a matter to be treated with care and expertise. It is possible you might be thinking that an implant could solve your problems quickly but, slow down; it is not as easy as it sounds. The surgeon has to make sure that the patient is a good candidate for this. This means that he qualifies for a surgery because it represents the last resort in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction and he has a good general health condition. The implant designs are trusty and they can even last a lifetime but they can malfunction as well. This is why is so important that the doctor has good communication with you, and if he considers you fit as a candidate for the surgery, he will also explain the procedure, risks and possible complications it can bring and what is the best kind of device for you. There are 2 types of implant: semirigid rods and inflatable implants (two-piece inflatable implant and a three-piece inflatable implant).
The purpose of going through a penile implant surgery is to let men with ED (Erectile Dysfunction) have an erection with a device that is introduced in the inside of the penis. It can also be used to treat the Peyronies's disease which causes bending of the penis or painful erections because of the formation of scars inside of it. Risks factors for this procedure are: malfunction -parts of the implant can break over time for semirigid implants or in inflatable devices, the valve can fail or the fluid can leak- also, men with diabetes or spinal cord injury due to a higher risk of infection. In either case another surgery would be necessary to fix the problem.
Implants are not made for cosmetics purposes only. They serve the medical purpose mainly, not just for penis stretching reasons and it's not recommended for men who do not suffer ED or Peyronie's disease. The problem with the semirigid implants is that the penis stays slightly rigid all the time and it shows.
Inflatable is the preferred kind of penile implant in the US; they can be manipulated (i.e. inflate for an erection and deflate otherwise). The two-piece implant works with the pump and the fluid reservoir together inside the scrotum whereas the three-piece implant has the pump inserted in the scrotum and the fluid reservoir valve under the abdomen.
The penile implant cost, will vary from one region to the other, depending on the physician you choose to handle your case and the kind of implant. You should ask and be informed about the choices around but, on average, it can go from $10.000 to $20.000.
If you decide you want to go for it, your doctor will first determine the ED cause and discard any other cure method, check if you are a good candidate for it, give you medication to prepare and instruct you about penile implants and then you can decide.
